Meet the Speakers

Dr. Amal Mattu completed his emergency medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, followed by a teaching fellowship with a special focus on emergency cardiology. He joined the faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland in 1996, where he currently serves as professor, vice chair of Education, director of the Faculty Development Fellowship, and co-director of the Emergency Cardiology Fellowship.

An internationally recognized educator, Dr. Mattu has received more than 20 teaching commendations, including national honors from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM), and the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA). Among his many distinctions are ACEP's Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award and its highest teaching honor, the Outstanding Contributions to Education Award. Dr. Mattu is the author of the bestselling texts ECGs for the Emergency Physician, Volumes 1 and 2, and has served as editor of 18 additional emergency medicine textbooks. He is a frequent speaker at national and international continuing medical education conferences.

Career highlights: Receiving ACEP's Outstanding Contributions to Education Award, serving as Vice Chair of Education at the University of Maryland, and helping educate generations of emergency physicians through teaching, writing, and lectures around the world.

Dr. Birnbaumer is residency-trained in both internal medicine and emergency medicine. She is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Emeritus Faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California. 

Dr. Birnbaumer has given over 2,500 lectures locally, nationally, internationally, and virtually. Among other honors, she has received the American College of Emergency Physicians' (ACEP's) Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award, the Outstanding Contribution to Education Award, and the Harbor-UCLA Department of Emergency Medicine Lifetime Education Award. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the 8th Edition of Roberts and Hedges' Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine and Acute Care.

Career highlights: Being the closing Keynote Speaker at the 2022 ACEP Scientific Assembly on the topic "Why We Matter and Where We Go From Here," and meeting my future husband while serving on a committee for ACEP – best member benefit ever!

Dr. Michelle Lin is a UCSF professor of Emergency Medicine who is an emergency physician by night and an online educator by day. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM), a leading digital education platform for emergency medicine. As the lead author for the book Tricks of the Trade in Emergency Medicine, she bridges clinical practice with innovation. Her interests include social media-based digital scholarship, knowledge translation, and emerging applications of artificial intelligence in our professional and personal lives.  

Dr. Tabas is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, residency trained in both internal medicine and emergency medicine. An internationally recognized educator, he has co-chaired UCSF's High Risk Emergency Medicine CME conference since 2000 and teaches locally, nationally, and internationally on cardiovascular emergencies and procedural skills. 

Dr. Tabas has received the American College of Emergency Physicians' Outstanding Contribution to Education Award and serves as an editor of textbooks on emergency electrocardiography, cardiovascular emergencies, and emergency clinical procedures.

Dr. Hanley is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, whose research advances care for patients presenting with complications from gender-affirming surgery. His work in this area, published in Annals of Emergency Medicine, is shaping best practices for treating gender-diverse populations in the emergency department. 

He has also served as an editor for Roberts and Hedges’ Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine, one of the field’s most trusted manuals. Passionate about mentorship and medical education, Dr. Hanley trains the next generation of physicians while continuing clinical work and scholarship at UCSF, where he also completed his residency and fellowship.

Dr. Colwell is Vice Chair and Chief of Emergency Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Hospital and Trauma Center – the city’s only Level I trauma center – and an Endowed Professor of Emergency Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. 

Dr. Coralic is a full-time Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacist and a Pharmacotherapy Specialist at UC San Francisco. He is also a Clinical Professor in the UCSF School of Pharmacy and the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Coralic has published numerous peer-reviewed studies and book chapters and has been involved in large multi-center clinical trials. 

Dr. Daniel is an Assistant Clinical Professor of emergency medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, where his passion for interactive lectures and didactics has led him to be instrumental as the Assistant Program Director of UCSF’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program. He is a respected clinician-educator whose expertise has been honored through several major institutional and national-level awards.
 

Dr. Degesys is the Medical Director of both the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights Emergency Department and its Age-Friendly Emergency Department (AFED). UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center is the first Level I Geriatric ED in Northern California. 

She is also the Medical Director of the Clinical Decision Unit and the Director of UCSF’s Emergency Medicine Administrative Fellowship.

Dr. Enriquez is the Emergency Department Airway Director at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Hospital and Trauma Center – the city’s only Level I trauma center. She also directs the UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine’s Global Health Fellowship and serves as an Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine.

Dr. Ehlers is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine and an attending medical toxicologist at the California Poison Control System – the largest poison control system in the United States. He is a distinguished speaker who has given more than 60 local talks and lectures, including invited lectures/Grand Rounds presentations at 10 residency/fellowship programs. Dr. Ehlers also frequently publishes and speaks on a variety of medical toxicology topics, such as novel psychoactive substances. 
 

Dr. Knight is Vice Chair for Opportunity and Community and an Emergency Medicine Opportunity and Community Endowed Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, where she holds an appointment as a Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine. She also serves as the Director of Faculty Experience at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) – the city’s only Level I trauma center.

Dr. Knight is the 2024-2025 recipient of the American College of Emergency Physicians' Outstanding Speaker of the Year award.

Dr. Lin-Martore is an Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. She also serves as the Director of Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, San Francisco, a Bridges Coach, and Co-Director of the Physician Identity Weeks for the UCSF School of Medicine. 

As an educator, Dr. Lin-Martore is interested in developing innovative curricula around pediatric emergency point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) applications and is the series editor of the PEM POCUS series at Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM). Her expertise and excellence as an instructor are recognized through her membership in the UCSF School of Medicine's Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.

Dr. Lu is a Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. She is a prolific speaker who has delivered more than 200 invited lectures nationally and internationally on a wide range of topics in emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine throughout her distinguished career.

Dr. Smollin is the Medical Director of the San Francisco Division of the California Poison Control System – the largest poison control system in the United States. He also holds an appointment as a Professor of Emergency Medicine in the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. 

Dr. Smollin previously served as the Medical Toxicology Fellowship Director at UCSF for more than 15 years and is board-certified in emergency medicine, medical toxicology, and addiction medicine. 

Dr. Wallin is an Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine and Assistant Medical Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Hospital and Trauma Center, the city’s only Level I trauma center. She practices clinically at both ZSFG and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco. 

Dr. Wallin previously served as Chief Resident of her emergency medicine residency program (UCSF-ZSFG) and Chief Fellow of her pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program (Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas).
